When it comes to family sessions, there are always a lot of questions, and I want to help answer them with a “Family Session FAQ.” Family photos can seem more stressful and time-consuming than easy and doable. That’s why today, I want to help you be as prepared as possible for your family photo session. If I can answer as many questions on the front end, your session will go super smoothly. I also have another blog post about family sessions you can check out here.
This is my most asked question when it comes to family sessions. I know that you are working around little ones schedules, so that can make it difficult to find the “perfect” time. The best time of day from a photographer/lighting stand point, is right before sunset. Since it is almost summer, that means the sunsets later in the evening, making it around 7:00-7:30. I know that can be too late for little ones, but there are a few things that can help make it go smoothly. If you are able to, give your kids that nap, a later nap. This way if they are going to be up after a normal bed time, it won’t feel as late. You can also bring things to distract that or help to keep them happy (snacks, bubbles, a stuffed animal, etc.) Surprisingly though, I am able to get a lot of shots in a short amount of time. So try not to stress if little ones are acting like kids, and let them be. It’s fun to grab family photos while everyone is acting “normal.”
Of course I want my clients to just show up and have a stress free time, but I know that family photos can bring a lot of stress (especially for all the mamas preparing for the session.) There’s not too much I ask for ahead of time, but if there are specific photos you are wanting, write them down on your phone or email it to me ahead of time. That way if we are feeling rushed, we can get the photos that you want done and out of the way. I already mentioned this, but bring a few things to help distract (or bribe) your kiddos with. You can also plan outfits ahead of time, that seems to be one of the biggest stressors when it comes to family sessions. If you didn;t know, I offer a client wardrobe, that is mainly caters to the ladies. If you are interested in checking out the dresses I offer, you can always message me on Instagram or email. Also, ladies if you want to take one less stressor away by getting professional makeup done, I always recommend Kirstie at Royal Beauty.
This is another FAQ when it comes to family sessions. I offer two different package options, half (30 minutes) or full (one hour). You can check out all of the details and package information here. If you are a smaller family, I definitely recommend the half session. You would be amazed how many photos we can get done in a short amount of time! If you are bringing along extra family members (grandparents, aunt, uncles, etc.) then the full session may be the one for you! We can always chat more about your specific situation.
The most important part of a family session is that you have fun and enjoy yourselves! I am capturing memories that you will be able to look back on forever, so soak it all in! Pictures last a lifetime, and I know that not every family has the time or money to get family photos done often. I am so thankful to each family who allows me the honor to capture their moments.
